Steve Russell

University of Wyoming

What personal accomplishment are you most proud of?

I am most proud of my efforts to date in driving economic development efforts on UW's campus and therefore, in our Laramie community. We have gone from 7 student ideas a year to over 190 students participating in our competition/programming with continued growth!

What is your primary personal development goal/business goal for the next 5 years?

I primary personal development goal is a bit different from my business goal. Personally, I would like to earn my PhD in Marketing in 5 years. My business goal is to merge our state's ENDOW program with our UW efforts to activate awareness among students of all the valuable resources in the state for entrepreneurs.

What is your biggest philanthropic achievement?

My biggest philanthropic achievement was the creation of a giving program for our college which entailed me giving back $20.11 for my graduation year and has now rolled into many students each year graduating and starting to give back towards additional student scholarships for Wyoming students. This was the first year that one of the alumni has now shifted to giving their graduation year amount per month instead of per year with hopefully more to follow!

What action or event that you've been a part of, that you believe has made the biggest difference in Laramie? Or are you most proud of?

I think the Leadership Laramie group project we accomplished last year to raise money for a food pantry at Whiting High School was the opportunity to make a difference in our community that I am most proud of.

What excites you most about the future of Laramie?

The alignment of state goals, Albany County goals, and UW goals to create more companies and more high paying jobs in Laramie leading to growth of our economy in a fashion that is sustainable (it's exciting and scary all at the same time, but it's not that exciting if it doesn't push the boundaries a bit!)

What do you think has helped make you successful in your endeavors?

My willingness to find time for other people, regardless of their title or status. Building relationships is a passion of mine driven from the way I was raised that will also put people first.

What advice would you give to other young professionals in Laramie?

You're not too young to accomplish big goals. "Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right." -Henry Ford
